Our Summer Residential breaks are a series of weeklong outdoor activity learning experiences for disadvantaged children aged 5-13 from across Liverpool and Merseyside. The project is held during August, with the aim of giving children a ‘break’, showing them that they and life do have more to offer.
Our Residential is specially designed for children and structured around their needs. The children spend a week undertaking a range of outdoor activities, which help them to learn both about themselves and the environment including issues such as co-operation vs. competition, teamwork and self- discovery. Whatever the children are taught on our breaks we aim to capture their imagination, so as to make learning interesting and fun. The focus is very much on personal growth and development through an individual’s sense of self-worth, allied to team spirit and caring.
Practical activities include kayaking, rock climbing, caving, high ropes, archery, overnight camps, swimming, treks, work around natural flora and fauna and with animals and making a video of their week and experiences. Each child receives individual attention and all are encouraged to work at their own pace. At the end of the week every child receives a certificate of achievement and a ‘best of’ award.
The children we take on Summer Residential are recommended by local statutory and voluntary agencies including social services, looked after children’s education service (LACES) and women’s aid for example and have no other opportunity for a break away from their family/carers and the everyday situations and problems they face. Activities are designed to lead to increased self-esteem and have a positive impact on a cycle of poverty and disadvantage, increasing self-belief and confidence and providing learning experiences that impact into adulthood.
We can only run our Summer Residential breaks thanks to the generous help and support of others. Which is why, every donation or means of support we receive is vitally important to us. Support KIND today and give a child a better tomorrow.
